We all know that prevention is better than cure, please let me add that early diagnosis has better outcomes than late detection. Don't wait for serious illness, if something doesn't feel right, check it now!!
Screening
So, there are some things we can do tests for to try and catch early. For breast cancer one of the things that can be done is a mammogram which takes a type of x-ray of your breasts. This is usually more helpful in older women. If you have access to this where you live, please consider taking up the offer.
Knowing yourself
Whether there is or isn't a screening programme where you are, there are some things you can do to catch things early.
CHECK YOUR BREASTS!!
Ok, it's a sensitive topic, I know to talk about it in some cultures is a taboo. There are videos online to help you know how to check your breasts. The important thing is that you should get to KNOW YOUR OWN BREASTS and see a doctor if you notice any changes, whether what they look like or feel like or start producing e.g. discharge.
Sometimes, genetics can play a role in the risk of breast cancer so if you have people in your family with breast, ovarian, bowel cancer, you are at higher risk. This risk is higher if multiple people in your family had these cancers or those close to you (mother, father, sister, brother) had them when they were young i.e. under 50 years old.
Other things that can increase your risk include smoking and obesity.
